Meet the Mathis Family

The heart behind the Mathis Home is Chelsea and John Mathis and their four children. Chelsea holds her Masters in Social Work and is the New River Valley Director of Felts Supports for Living –  she has been in the mental health field since she was 18 years old. Inspired by her father’s work, Chelsea grew up in a home that welcomed two individuals with developmental and physical disabilities into the family when she was just 7 years old. That experience shaped her view of care and community. After her father retired, Chelsea and John naturally transitioned into providing care for the two individuals that she grew up with.

Today, their children share in the experience—drawing, painting, sharing stories about school, and simply spending quality time together with the residents. The family cherishes the connections formed, especially visits from the youngest family member—the baby—who always brings joy to the entire household!

Welcome to the Mathis Group Home

At the Mathis Home, we believe every person deserves a safe, supportive place to call home. Located on a peaceful 20-acre farm in Floyd, Virginia, our beautiful, handicapped-accessible modular home was built in 2019 with comfort and accessibility in mind. The home features four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a spacious kitchen, dining area, and cozy living room—perfect for both quiet relaxation and lively gatherings. A large 20x10 back deck offers long-range mountain views and frequent visits from local wildlife.

Our group home is supported by a dedicated team, including staff who reside on the property: our Group Home Manager lives in a nearby cabin, while one of our Direct Support Professional (DSP) lives in the farmhouse with her family. Even our friendly farm cat helps make the home feel warm and welcoming.

Community, Adventure, and Daily Joy

Life at the Mathis Group Home is full of meaningful moments and daily adventures. Inside the home, residents enjoy art activities, home-cooked meals, outdoor time enjoying the long-range view of the WVA mountains, movie nights, and shared routines that foster independence, joy, and a sense of belonging.

Beyond the home, residents are active participants in their community—attending local IDA events in the New River Valley, visiting the farmers market, eating out at favorite restaurants, or catching the latest movie at the theater. “Our philosophy is simple: we meet people where they are and support them in experiencing a fulfilling life at their own pace.” As John puts it, “It’s not about changing who someone is—it’s about embracing who they are and walking alongside them. Everyone deserves to live a life that feels meaningful to them.”

With a full-time Registered Nurse on site, residents have peace of mind knowing their health and wellness are always a priority. And thanks to the inclusive family environment, every person has the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and feel truly seen.

Faith, Family, and a Future Full of Possibility

The Mathis Home isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to thrive. Whether it’s one resident acting as the official porch greeter or the shared joy of birthday celebrations, the culture here is rooted in connection. Families are always welcome, and friends are encouraged to visit often.

We strive to create a home where everyone is valued, has a voice, and feels part of something greater. As Chelsea puts it, “We all have gifts and something to offer this world. Being able to foster that connection makes me really happy.”
